It's one component of pre-employment process and screening that Hall's see as key to recruitment.
Every potential driver and operator of the company undergoes the profiling.
ARM is an online fleet risk management tool that's offered as part of Lumley's commercial motor policy. The ARM Profile Programme has enabled Hall's to assess potential drivers and operators on safety control, risk avoidance, stress tolerance, driver attitude and quality orientation.
Safety control allows Hall's to identify candidates who lack the ability to work safely. They may see accidents as bad luck or misfortune which is not the case.
Torque Fleet Risk Management scenario
The risk avoidance scale measures whether a person is likely to routinely follow company safety rules and regulations. It also assesses tendencies to engage in other counter-productive and dangerous behaviours such as not using safety equipment.
The stress tolerance scale measures how aware a person is of stress, how they recognise its effects and how effectively they cope with it. Driver attitude assesses attitudes toward safe driving practices. Poor scores indicate that the driver has less regard for complying with road rules and company safety practices.
Hall's are not interested in taking on someone who is going to break the rules or have a careless or risk-taking behaviour and the ARM is a tool that assists significantly in achieving that.
The safety of our employees and other road users is a priority at Hall's. On the job driving is one of the riskiest activities our employees undertake on a daily basis. Consequently, any vehicle incidents, particularly preventable incidents, continue to be an area that needs constant reinforcement.
The DriveCam system is designed to encourage safe driving performance and reduce at-risk driving behaviours. There are currently over 120 Hall's vehicles deployed with the DriveCam system today and results have proven to be significant.
The system is designed to capture audio and video inside and outside the vehicle when triggered by unusual force such as hard braking, swerving, or a collision. This is an exception-based recording system meaning it only saves an event when the vehicle experiences hard force. Once triggered, a 20 second video is saved consisting of 10 seconds before the force was experienced and 10 seconds afterwards.
There is also a button on the event recorder for the driver to activate the equipment manually. Our drivers use this to record issues such as: traffic problems causing service delays or to record risky behaviour of other road users that can be forward to the relevant authorities/company.
Follow up with the driver is scheduled when a video contains driving behaviour that is risky or against company policy. During that feedback session, employees are provided an opportunity to view and comment on the video. Positive encouragement is provided when good driving behaviours are observed. Equally true, when risky behaviours are observed, employees are provided with positive coaching, delivered in a manner that will reduce further at-risk behaviour and increase good driving behaviours.
This is an effective tool that has proven benefits and is extremely time effective as any clips are down-loaded wirelessly when our vehicles go past any Hall's depot.
In 2009 Hall's introduced grippers into the company as part of our standard PPE. Originally used for ice curling, the soft rubber overshoes provide significant grip in the sometimes icy/slippery floors of the trailers used to transport chilled and frozen product. In the original trial done in 2009 both drivers and stores personnel found the over-shoe gave them they required ‘grip' on wet or icy floors - hence the name. Since the induction into the company there has been a significant reduction in slips that in the past resulted in injury.

There has always been a risk when manual handling tasks are involved that injuries will result. At Hall's we found in certain areas of our business manual handling tasks were resulting in strains and sprains that was impacting on the employee and the business. As a result we introduced a manual handling training programme, through Provention, to assist in giving techniques to reduce strains and sprains.
We have found this programme to be effective and the results is something we are constantly monitoring. Because let's be honest we are frequently working in challenging physical environments. These range from long lengths of time sitting, to heavy manual work often in awkward settings and unfortunately these challenges are an unchanging part of our business.
Provention training is focused on giving employees the tools and awareness to reduce the risk of injury even in these challenging set ups. It is not about being able to move safely all of the time but to have skills to reduce the strain on your body and hence limit the likelihood of suffering an injury.
For instance how:
- You can use your hands more effectively to fire your abdominal muscles and support your back when your pushing and pulling frames.
- Lifting like a weight lifter will automatically use your legs and take the stress of your back.
- Moving with balance when you are bending takes care of your back and knees
- Using your shoulders wisely when you are transferring pig carcasses will take the pressure of your back and your shoulder.
- Once we use our body effectively we will automatically have more strength and less tension.
Hall's have found this programme to significantly reduce injuries associated with manual handling. If you would like further information to see if Provention can assist your business call Alison Richmond on 0274 950 045
Hall's is at the forefront of safety within the Transport Industry in New Zealand. Our Road to Zero Programme incorporates strong policies and procedures which are supported through robust systems.
Safety is the first agenda item for all Hall's meetings, and we are committed to ensuring that our safety performance continues to improve.
Safety sits above everything we do at Hall's and this is also most evident at the front end of recruitment. We have rigorous measures and hurdles that are required to be passed before being offered a job at Hall's. These, along with the normal recruitment processes, include:
- A driving assessment with one of our qualified in-house driver trainers
- Full medical and Drug test
- Accident Risk Management (ARM) Profile Programme
At Hall's safety is everyone's priority and providing a safe and healthy work environment for employees, customers and the community is not optional - it is just what we do.
Halls have a dedicated Driver Training Team who are involved in the recruitment, training, on-going assessment and development of drivers. Our comprehensive induction and training programme doesn't stop once the driver has been employed. Drivers start with a buddy system then have regular in-cab assessments and along with Road Show meetings and DriveCam review, address wide-ranging issues including safety attitude, fatigue awareness, gear control, road position and, efficient driving and safe driving.
We are constantly reviewing and analysing our culture, our safety results and feedback, from our safety meetings (12 safety meetings every month), result in continuous improvement initiatives. Some of these initiatives include:l
- DriveCam Programme
- Ever-changing safety signage and messages
- Safety Cross
- Road Shows
- Fatigue Tool Box meetings
- Manual handling training
- Safety Training
- A sharing of safety learning's with large NZ companies
- Grippers
Our innovative Our Road to Zero Programme goes beyond doing the basics well. This is about stepping up to the ever moving challenges our industry presents. We do this through constant analysis feedback from our safety meetings and audits. Everyone takes personal responsibility for their safety, and for the safety of others.
The Directors of Hall's Refrigerated Transport announced that they have taken a 51% interest in the Goodfellow Group company Easy Logistics.
The investment creates a New Zealand wide temperature controlled transport, storage and logistics company that will allow the consolidated entity to offer a fully integrated temperature controlled supply chain solution to customers needing such service within Auckland.
The Board's of both companies agree that there are tremendous synergies associated with this partnership as it harnesses the strengths of Hall's transportation which consists of 11 regional depots, 250 trucks & trailers and 100 rail intermodal units with Easy Logistics who hold number two position in the Auckland cold storage market with 10,000 pallets of cold storage and 12,000 pallets of ambient.
CEO for Hall's Alan Pearson stated "We are excited by this investment as it allows Hall's to realise a key action of our Strategic Plan to combine our temperature controlled transport capability with cold storage. A Greenfields investment would have been time consuming, costly and introduced additional capacity into a market that is already well served. Easy Logistics are the number two player in the Auckland cold storage market, however previously lacked the transport feeder assets and capability to assist their storage service offering to customers. Both New Zealand owned and operated companies will benefit from this partnership."
I am sure all employees will see this investment as a positive action in the growth of our company.
